Most baroque country seats sit on a rise and look down. This one sits in a lake and looks at itself. The water was engineered for the effect — four ponds made into one, in the 1720s, during the remodelling Augustus the Strong commissioned from Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and Zacharias Longuelune. What the walk gets you when the doors are shut
The three weeks from 2 to 19 November are the only stretch of the year with no exhibition in the building at all, and the park is what is left. So is the outer staircase with the golden shoe on it. The lighthouse, and what I cannot tell you
A brick lighthouse, painted, 21.8 metres high, on a lake about as far from the sea as Saxony gets, standing beside a miniature harbour. It belongs to the Fasanenschlösschen and to the mock naval games that building was made for. I have no published information about going inside it, and none about whether dogs are allowed in the park or what the photography rules are, so those three things stay unanswered here. A walk through the village with something to do
The self-guided scavenger hunt is the one listing that is Moritzburg and nothing else: a posted box of eleven sealed envelopes, eleven stations on foot, about four hours at your own pace, around forty euros for a group of up to ten. Is the park at Moritzburg Castle free?
I do not know whether the Schlosspark charges anything, and I would rather say that than invent a figure. The castle exhibition has its own admission, on the rate card.
Why is Moritzburg Castle on an island?
Because Augustus the Strong had four smaller ponds flooded into one during the remodelling of 1723 to 1733, which put the building in the middle of a single lake.
